These days synthetic turf fields are becoming more common. Although they are expensive to install, there are many advantages including low maintenance, as well as having a free draining structure that sheds water right through the field, keeping it usable and dry during unfavorable weather. This particular field was designed with a flat panel drain tile at subgrade, and 6” of free draining stone above it. Above the stone is the artificial turf material with a thin layer of finely chopped up rubber pellets. The result is water will flow right through the materials down to the drain tile and flow to the storm manholes.

These fields have a very stringent grading tolerance which is only 1/8” per foot. The traditional way to achieve this level of accuracy is to stake the entire field with hubs and then rake it by hand. Instead, we utilized Millimeter GPS. The MMGPS technology utilizes both a GPS system and a Laserzone system which corrects the normal fluctuations of GPS. The Laserzone transmitter broadcasts a laser that the receiver on the machine uses to correct the elevation. The result is a machine that can grade to within 0.01’.

Once we had the stone graded the turf contractor was then able to place the finish materials on the field. Jay Onstad from FieldTurf Tarkett out of Blaine, MN was very impressed with the job we did. “That is probably in the top 10% of grading jobs on a field that I’ve seen”, Jay said.
